However, two additional grass species, Hordeum depressum and Sporobolus airoides, are worthy of comment. Neither of these species were listed by CalFlora as being specifically associated with the Valley Grassland community (H. depressum was listed as being associated with “many plant communities).

Nevertheless, they are often encountered in the remnants of upland habitat on the west side of the Valley, and it seems reasonable to consider them here as part of the Valley Grassland flora. When considered in this manner, we have encountered about a fourth (24.1%) of the 29 Fresno County “Valley Grassland grasses.” Five of the seven grasses could be said to be fairly well-represented, as these occur in four or more collecting areas.
