Here, it can be seen that only about a third (33.0%) of the 88 Fresno County “Valley Grassland” species were noted at the Alkali Sink and/or Kerman Ecological Reserves.

It is also evident that this community is poorly-represented. Two-thirds (67.1%) of the 88 species were present in only 1-3 collecting areas. About a tenth of the species (11.4%) were not encountered at any of the valley floor collecting areas. When considering that these 88 species only represent about a fifth of the “historical” Fresno County Valley Grassland species, it is very clear that just a small portion of the historical flora remains in the Western San Joaquin Valley.
