Land cover is represented at a very general community level (grasslands, saltbush scrub, water, wetlands, Valley oak woodland, riparian) and developed land use is in two broad categories (urban, irrigated agriculture).
This data was designed to estimate landscape change over time in the San Joaquin Valley of California in a series of six time frames: pre-European settlement (approximately 1850), 1885, 1912, 1945, 1977, 2000. It was used to provide illustrations and tabular data in support of presentation and publications describing ecological change in the San Joaquin Valley of California.
